Cathedral Square Development - Stage 5: Proposed plan
Cathedral Square Development - Stage 5

General Comments

The new alignment of the road and parking layout creates more spaces for pedestrian activity areas and adds more trees to the Square. The plan makes some suggestions about what types of activity could be developed in the future, possibly including such things as an interactive water feature, or play activities or art and sculpture areas, but these will all be subject to future discussions.

The road surface will be the standard asphalt surface that is now being used in the Square, and the pedestrian areas will be of the same granite paving as the rest of the Square area.

It is acknowledged that restricting the road direction to one-way might be perceived as a disadvantage to some.

However, no part of the city or Square is made inaccessible by the road being one-way, and the road is not a key link in the city’s road network. It is considered that the balance between traffic needs and the Square’s amenity and pedestrian vitality is best met by a one-way road.
