Railway North (Northcote to Tuckers) Proposed Cycleway Extension

Description
This proposed cycleway and will be an extension of the existing facility south of Northcote Road, and in future it will extend to the Main North Road to the north. The project involves the installation of a signalised pedestrian/cycle facility on Northcote Road at the rail crossing. Northcote Road, the rail crossing alarms, and Vagues Road left turn out, will be included in the traffic signal phasing. The signals will operate in a similar manner to those installed where the existing railway cycleway crosses Fendalton Road, Glandovey Road, and Blighs Road.

The pathway will run from Northcote Road to Tuckers Road between the tracks and the waterway on the west side and is located in the Shirley/Papanui Community Board area.

The primary objectives of the project are as follows:
Construct a cycleway link along the railway corridor between Northcote Road and Tuckers Road.
Install traffic signals at the Northcote Road intersection with the cycleway.
Provide safe crossing points at all road intersections.
Ensure adequate lighting is provided.

The pathway will be 3 to 3.5m wide and will require a retaining wall at least on the track side of the path. Some landscaping is proposed at the Northcote Road end of the pathway where it links into the road and the existing culverts will be extended. The physical nature of the rail corridor, with the waterway nearby has left little scope for changes to the path alignment. Please click on the link below to view the consultation plans.

Construction is programmed to start in April 2009 at an estimated cost of $891,400.
